FAQ’s 

Q: What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?

A: Pilates and yoga complement each other because they both increase strength, flexibility, and stability. While these movement formats share similar benefits, they are entirely different practices with unique origins, exercises, movement philosophies, breathing techniques, and goals.  They offer different approaches toward lengthening and strengthening.  

Pilates can be performed on a mat using body weight and on specialized equipment designed by Joseph Pilates to work the entire body in all ranges of motion.  Experience a Pilates session to feel the difference!

Q: I’m new to Pilates.  Where do I start?

A: For your safety and improved results, I recommend taking private lessons before jumping into a class or duet.  By taking private lessons first, you will learn proper movement technique and principles based on your specific needs.  With this knowledge, you can then apply your modifications in a class or duet that moves at a faster pace with less individualized attention. 

Q: How often should I do Pilates?

A: Three times a week is ideal; however once a week will give you Pilates benefits.  Because Pilates is a practice, consistency is the key to success and results.  

Q: Do I need to be flexible or fit to do Pilates?

A: Nope!  That’s exactly why you should take Pilates - to improve your flexibility, strength, endurance, and overall fitness no matter where your starting point is!

Q: Is Pilates only for women?

A: Joseph Pilates created Pilates, originally named Contrology.  Men and women alike can benefit from increased strength, stability, and flexibility.  Top male athletes like Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and other NBA players incorporate Pilates into their workouts!

Q: Can I do Pilates if I am pregnant?

A: Depending on the stage of pregnancy, your training can be modified to help you to stay fit during the most important nine months of your life in a safe manner.  I require that you consult your physician for approval before starting Pilates during pregnancy.  

Q:  What should I wear to do Pilates?

A:  Come to a Pilates session wearing comfortable workout clothes without zippers.  Pilates is performed barefoot or with special socks with gripped bottoms. 

Q: Can I do Pilates to help me with alignment-related pain or injuries?

A:  Yes!  Pilates has been incorporated into physical therapy programs because it is so comprehensive and alignment-focused.  Often, through improving core-centered movement and balanced muscle development, Pilates alleviates pain.  It is important to note that Pilates instructors are not medical professionals and cannot diagnose or treat injuries or pain. I strongly recommend that you consult your physician for approval before starting Pilates.

Q: Can I lose weight by doing Pilates?

A: Pilates helps you to build lean, long muscles and efficient movement patterns.  Everyone should start with Pilates to build stability, flexibility, muscular endurance and strength, and body awareness. Increasing your muscle mass and moving efficiently helps you to burn more calories for every movement performed.   Partnering Pilates with cardiovascular exercise and healthy eating will assist toward the goal of fat burn.
